It was an honor to participate in the events recognizing the career of Harry Belafonte at Berklee College of Music in Boston last week. I was on a panel at the Teach-in which discussed the historical context of his music and activism. It was also fun joining the lively faculty discussion of Belafonte’s memoir.

The tribute concert and honorary doctorate ceremony were the highlights of the two-day celebration. Berklee students and faculty presented a retrospective of Belafonte’s music that was world class. Belafonte’s speech was thoughtful and inspiring as he seemed truly moved by the tribute. He recalled one of his first meetings with Paul Robeson when the elder artist/activist reminded him that artists are the gatekeepers of truth. It was a stirring message for a very memorable night.
